Torpedo/White 7 (TacO) Michael "Torpedo" Steinberg was the son of a rich Imperial Merchant and a baroness on the Imperial Capital, Coruscant. Torpedo's father was a strong supporter of the Empire, and Michael had very high expectations: A military career, combat, glory, and power. When he was tested for the Imperial Naval Academy, it was determined that he would make a very good officer, but he only had the skills of a mediocre pilot.

Determined to make his family proud, Torpedo forced his way through flight school, managing to become an adequate pilot despite his initial test scores. Although he would be an asset in most fighter squadrons, his real value is on the bridge of a capital ship. Torpedo graduated near the top of his class, specializing primarily in communications but also in command and intelligence. Torpedo is certified to command anything smaller than an Interdictor Class Star Destroyer, and can serve as communications officer on ships as large as an Imperial class Star Destroyer.

Michael was happily serving as the Communications Officer on the Modified Frigate Contempt when he heard news of his mother's death: it seems that her space yacht had "accidentally" crashed when someone had "accidentally" put an explosive in the vertical stabilizer port of her ship. Just as her yacht passed over the zenith of the planet it was orbiting, the stabilizer was destroyed and the smoking hull burned up upon entry into the planet's upper atmosphere. Torpedo took leave from his post to go to her funeral, and afterwards used simple aspects of his intelligence training to find out that his mother had been murdered by an Imperial assassin on the false grounds that she was a rebel sympathizer. Enraged, Torpedo defected to the Alliance where he now uses his extensive training to further the Rebel cause.
